Cave Story invariably gets mentioned whenever independent games are discussed, and for good reason: it's a great video game. Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya has paired finely tuned game mechanics with a sad but sweet tale involving a power-hungry mad scientist, an amnesiac robot soldier and a race of rabbit-like creatures called Mimigas. The music and graphics are decidedly retro, but serve the simple elegance of the game.

Cave Story is a true classic that takes a beloved genre to a near-perfect excellence. This is an excellent adventure / platformer, where you control a little robot who is trying to save mimigas (creatures which are similar to rabbits) from the bad doctor. During the game you will have to find some various items which will help you to access new levels or save mimigas. You will also find life capsules which increase your maximum health. There are also at least 5 weapons available throughout the game.

Each weapon can be built up to the maximum level (3) fairly quickly, but taking damage will drain energy from its experience meter, sometimes causing it to level down. Given how quickly they power up this only tends to be an issue during boss fights, and even then there´s usually plenty of opportunities for collecting more weapon energy.

You can expand your health meter by collecting Life Capsules in similar fashion to Metroid games, while you can get stronger by collecting energy to boost your firearms´ output.
